F O U N D E D i n 1 9 9 6 by David Yurkovich, Sleeping Giant Comics has been both a weird and wonderful endeavor. SGC began with the Xeric-powered DEATH BY CHOCOLATE in 1996, a satirical secret-agent thriller that spawned three sequels, including the critically acclaimed BROCCOLI AGENDA.
Yurkovich developed THRESHOLD (later relaunched as The Super-Heroes of Philadelphia [SHOP]) in fall 1996. While deconstructionism in super-heroics had already been examined by various writers, most notably Alan Moore (WATCHMEN), Yurkovich's approach to the genre dealt with the absurdity of the basic super-hero concept. In 1999 Yurkovich began an ambitious project entitled ALTERCATIONS, the first volume of which was published in 2001 to solid critical reviews. Yurkovich recently completed volume 2 of ALTERCATIONS; publication is expected in the near future. In 2004 Yurkovich's early THRESHOLD stories were published in a collected edition by TOP SHELF PRODUCTIONS. Top Shelf published the collected DEATH BY CHOCOLATE in August 2007. David also wrote and produced MANTLO: A LIFE IN COMICS (a tribute to writer Bill Mantlo that includes previously unpublished Mantlo stories). David and SGC co-founder Dianne Pearce are producing a series of children's books including SOMEONE NEEDS A BATH.
In addition to his work in the comics industry, Yurkovich has written more than 100,000 words (both fiction and nonfiction) on WIDE AWAKE. He also serves as a contributing editor to the media web site, POP THOUGHT. David's first novel, BANANA SEAT SUMMER, is represented by Parkeast Literary.
Yurkovich is currently producing various graphic novels (including the online project, NOCTURNE), prose stories and essays, and another novel (as yet untitled). Details and publication information is forthcoming as these projects progress forward.
